SCORM
SCORM stands for Shareable Content Object Reference Model. This is a standard for web-based E-learning. It defines how the individual instruction elements are combined on a technical level and sets conditions for the software needed for using the content. The standard uses XML and it is based on the results of work done by AICC, IMS, IEEE, and Ariadne.

History
In January 1999, US Executive Order 13111 was signed tasking the Department of Defense (DoD) USA in leading the development of common specifications and standards for technology-based learning across both federal and private sectors. Following the signing of the order, the initial draft version of the Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) was developed and began to integrate and connect the work of these two sectors to support the newly formed Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative.

A conformant testing initiative was started in 2003. Avilar's WebMentor LMS was the first to receive SCORM certification on 12 February 2003. In December 2004, USA Department of Defence mandated that all its e-learning purchases must conform to SCORM standards. By August 2005, ADL had validated a total of 178 SCORM conformant products.
